Chapter Fourteen

Pearl

“I’m going to go call Narissa from the beach and see if I can get an update,” I whisper to Skarlyt as the rest of the village continues packing up their belongings.

“I talked to her yesterday; there was nothing new to report.”

I give her a nod of thanks before looking around for Amelia. I spot her in the shadow of her Ya-Ya, talking animatedly about something. Knowing that she’s safe, I turn, take the path through the rocks and back out onto the beach, and pull my phone out.

“Hello?” A voice answers.

“Kristle?” I ask, recognizing her voice.

“Pearl?” she asks almost excitedly.

“Yes. I wanted to check in.”

“Thank the goddess,” she says, breathing out in what I imagine is a sigh of relief.

“What’s wrong?” Immediately, my hackles rise. She doesn’t sound like she’s underwater like I’d expect.

“I was just going to call you.”

“Why? Did something happen?”

“Kind of. We were starving them out like we planned, but then the sea expelled them and pushed them onto shore.”

“Where?” I ask. Wondering why, after ignoring their presence for almost three weeks, the goddess would choose to notice them now.

“I think we’re still somewhere in Greece, but that’s not the worst thing...”

“Spit it out, Kristle.”

“We can hear Sky… I mean… we can hear his screams of pain. It’s almost like they know we’re here, and they’re doing it to provoke us.”

As she speaks, I hear the wobble in her voice.

“That’s precisely what they’re doing,” I warn her. “They may not know exactly who’s been starving them out, but they know someone is behind it. They want you to rush in so they can get more of us.”

“Well, if something doesn’t happen soon, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Almost everyone, especially my mom, is ready to storm in and free him.”

I cut her off quickly. “You can’t let that happen.”

She heaves out a heavy breath. “I know. The only thing stopping them is me and Mizu. Pearl…”

“Yes?”

“We could really use your help.”

I glance back at the path to the village, even more torn than I was already.

“I know your mate is important, and I don’t know that I would be able to choose anything other than Mizu to focus on if I were in your shoes but…”

“Shit,” I whisper and begin pacing on the beach.

She needs help. My pod needs help. My kind needs help, but so does my mate. Can I really chance sacrificing either of them?

“Pearl?” Kristle’s concerned voice halts my muttering under my breath and sparks a new idea.

“Okay, new plan. Send everyone except you and Mizu back to the island. Tomorrow, we attack.”

“And me and Mizu?”

“You stay and monitor the situation, take as many pictures as you can, and send them to me. The more we know the better.”

“Okay,” she says, sounding a little more lighthearted than before.

“Pearl?” Skarlyt says, running up to meet me by the water.

“What is it?” I search her panicked face for answers. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s Loukas.”

“Kristle, I have to go. Stick to the plan. Tell everyone I’ll meet them on the island as soon as I can.
